Selling artifacts

If an artifact has a listed Value, then PCs can Trade & Barter to sell it as if it were a special item. If they know or suspect that it's magical, they can try to leverage that for a better price—or they might need to hide its magical nature in order to close the deal. Magic creeps some folks out!

If an artifact has a Value "to the right buyer," then PCs could:

  • Know Things to identify a buyer, then send them word or seek them out
  • Wait for a trade opportunity (from Seasons Change) with such a buyer
  • Make a Plan to sell it at full Value
  • Use Trade & Barter to sell it for it a

Artifacts with no listed Value count as unique items: they can't be sold via Trade & Barter. As above, the PCs can Know Things or Make a Plan to find a buyer, or wait for a trade opportunity. If they find a buyer, assign the artifact a Value, typically 2 or 3 but sometimes as much as 4.

Trying to sell valuable or powerful artifacts is a fraught enterprise, a great way to turn those artifacts into MacGuffin threats. If the PCs refuse an offer, then the other party might try to steal the artifact (or send goons to do so). Even if the trade is successful, word might get out that Stonetop has such things, or that the PCs know where to find them, and that can lead to all sorts of unwanted attention.
