Pick a discovery—a clue, an encounter, an opportunity, an artifact or arcanum, or even another, smaller site. Maybe roll on a table from Book II to decide what it is. Put it in front of the PCs, and see what they do. Refer to the Discoveries chapter Discoveries for guidance and more examples.

"As you slink about the courtyard, your foot hits something hard. Metal? You look closer, and yeah, it's a bronze slab, poking out of the soil. And, oh-ho, there are more runes on it! What do you do?"

"'Hey, guys?' says Andras. He's looking at a wall in the back, and when you get closer you see it's a map. Of the whole city, from back before it fell. Here, let me sketch it out. It looks like… this."
